May Day, May Day

NEWSREEL PROJECT

What are news today? How are they made? What is relevant?

”May Day, May Day” is a project which is playfully exploring the notion of news.

With the actual crisis we realize the value of objective information. news are often used to confuse, to dis-inform, to scandalize and to antagonize.

Artists, video activists, filmmakers, actors, sound artist from different cities (Bad Wiessee, London, Hamburg, Bad Holz, Munich, Athens, Porto, Berlin) will be producing newsreel movies about the 1st of May.

A newsreel is a form of short documentary film prevalent in the first half of the twentieth century. it was regularly released in a public presentation place, like a cinema. It was a source of news, current affairs, entertainment for millions of moviegoers as well as an instrument of state propaganda until television supplanted its role in the 1950s.

The format of a newsreel offers various possibilities, topics and methods of reporting and narrating on a recent event or politicized mood – without succumbing to the spectacular and the apparent timeliness of the day’s events.
