Discussing Modernisms; an evening with the students of the Royal Institute of the Arts, Stockholm
ROYAL INSTITUTE OF ARTS STOCKHOLM and ATHENS SCHOOL OF FINE ART
How do we as practicing contemporary artists, largely working in the tradition of international avantgardes, react to the resurgence of Nationalist discourse? How is the national identity constructed in relation to modernism? Can we propose counter-constructs? Could one hack existing visual tropes to either undermine them or to make them more productive and challenging? What makes a nationalist and regionalist rhetoric so appealing at this moment? Such questions will motivate the exchange between the public and the students of the school, who are going to present their work on the relation between modernism and the Nation – State, focusing on the case of Sweden and considering the differences and the similarities with the Greek reality. The discussion is the conclusion of a weeklong workshop on the same topic that took place in the Annex of the Athens School of Fine Art in Delphi.
